EC cops arrested for "murder"

Two Eastern Cape policemen are appearing in court on Tuesday after being arrested for allegedly torturing and assaulting suspects in Alice.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate says the constabled, aged 27 and 32, were arrested on Sunday and face charges of murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.

IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, says one of the torture victims, 20 year old Bathandwa Kula, died as a result.

"It is alleged that on 11 August 2013, the deceased and another suspect were arrested and taken to the police station for questioning in connection with a housebreaking case. It is alleged that the deceased was questioned in one of the offices used by the detectives and he became unconscious. He was rushed to Alice Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," Dlamini said.

He said the "IPID was informed and it conducted an investigation. After interviewing the other suspect who was detained with the deceased on the same case, it was found that the two victims (including the deceased) were tortured by the two detectives."

"At the time of his death, the deceased was not detained on the allegation of housebreaking. The deceased had visible injuries all over his body," he added.

The Constables were arrested by the IPID and they will appear at the Alice Magistrates Court on 13 August 2013. They will face charges of murder, attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice.

"The IPID will oppose bail," said Dlamini.
