The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the arrest of an Eastern Cape policeman in connection with the murders of Fort Hare University staff members.

MP, Chantel King said the arrest of the policeman was another "breakthrough" in the investigation into the murders of University fleet manager, Petrus Roets in East London last year, and Mboneli Vesele, the bodyguard of Vice?Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu.

"The concern is that this police officer most likely used state vehicles to transport the alleged hitmen to the areas where these murders took place," King said.

She said the DA also called on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate "to investigate the possible use of state resources as well as other possible police officers involved in these murders."

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, 32-year-old Constable Lindokhuhle Manjati from Mthatha SAPS, appeared in court in court in Dikeni, formerly Alice, on Monday where the case against him was postponed to next week.

Spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said he faces two charges of murder and one of attempted murder.

Manjati is now the sixth suspect to be arrested in connection with the murder of Roets, who was gunned down in his car in Beacon Bay in East London in May last year, and Vesele, who was shot and killed in January 2023.

The other accused in the matter are Sicelo Mbulawa, Bongani Peter, Wanini Khuza, Mthobisi Khanyile, and Mthobisi Zondo/Dlamini.
