A suspected cable thief has mysteriously died after he and two others were apprehended at Frere Hospital in East London.
Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said three men were apprehended by security guards at the hospital on Wednesday night.
“When they started questioning them, one collapsed and was declared dead on arrival in a casualty ward,” he said.
Kupelo said on Monday hospital staff noticed that copper cables were stolen from between two buildings.
He said it is believed that the men returned to remove more cables when they were caught.
Kupelo said the matter is now with the police and an inquest docked will be opened for investigation.
