EC bus crash toll rises further

The death toll from the horror bus accident near Centane in the Eastern Cape has been revised back down to 25 after the Eastern Cape Transport Department said five people had died in hospital, raising the death toll to 29.

Twenty-four people died on the scene on Monday when a passenger bus ferrying mainly elderly people from Chebe to Butterworth went out of control and plunged more than 200 metres down an embankment.

The three-year-old toddler who was the first to be airlifted from the crash site, passed away in the Frere hospital yesterday.

Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, joined Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Liziwe Ntshinga, on a visit to the scene of the accident on Tuesday.

Mbabula's spokesperson Ayanda Allie Paine apologized for the discrepancy in the death toll.
