The troubled Eastern Cape Department of Education has received one of the biggest slices of the pie, as it has been allocated R1.6 billion rands from the provincial budget.

Finance MEC, Mlungisi Mvoko tabled this year’s budget at the Bisho Legislature on Wednesday.

He allocated a further R4.9 billion over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework to provide quality teaching and learning at schools.

The Eastern Cape Health Department received R1.4 billion rands for the year and a further R4.4 billion rands over the MTEF for health infrastructure.

MEC Mvoko said although litigations ordered against the Health Department are a burden and compromise the government's ability to render services, they are working hard on fixing the problem.

He added that they are making strides in clamping down on government officials conducting business with the State.

MEC Mvoko said these are the results of close collaboration between the Provincial Treasury and departments.

He added that over the past year, there had been a decrease in cases of officials who are either conflicted or potentially conflicted, by having their businesses registered to trade with the government.
