The Eastern Cape Provincial government says it has learnt with sadness of the passing of boxing manager and promoter, 72-year old Mzimasi Mnguni.
The premier's office said in a statement that from the time he and his wife returned from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape, Mnguni played a pivotal role in the development of boxing in the country and made his name in the sport when he joined the popular Eyethu Boxing Club in Mndantsane.
"He produced the first IBF world champion in the Eastern Cape, the enterprising Welcome Hawk Ncitha, and followed with Vuyani Bungu, Mbulelo Botile, Zolani Petelo and other world beaters", it said.
It says it will be writing to the President to request approval of the declaration of his funeral service in honour of the contribution he made in the development of the sport, as well as in business, where he used his money to sponsor the sport for the benefit of many young people and their families in the province.
