EC bottom of the class again in 2016

The Eastern Cape ended bottom of the class again in 2016, with the province recording a matric pass rate of 63.3%.

Announcing the outcome of the 2016 Senior Certificate Exams on Wednesday evening, Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, said this figure excluded so-called progressed learners.

She said more must be done to assist those progressed learners in the Eastern Cape where a mere 27.% had passed.

The Eastern Cape also had the highest number of education districts (4 out of 8) that recorded a pass mark of between 50% and 59%.  The best performing education district in the Eastern Cape was the Cradock district, according to the Minister.

Meanwhile, the Free State was the best performing province, with a leading 93.2% pass rate.

The Western Cape, with 87.7% and Gauteng with 87% were the next best performing  provinces.

Minister Motshekga said that the overall 2016 matric pass rate was 76.2%

Meanwhile, Estern Cape Department Education MEC, Mandla Makhuphula, will announce the province’s results in East London on Thursday.

He will be accompanied at the event by Premier, Phumulo Masualle.
