EC ANC wants changes in Bhisho and several municipalities

A reshuffle of the Eastern Cape government is looming with the ANC in the province also calling for changes in four municipalities.

This follows a two-day meeting of the ANC's provincial executive committee where the PEC received reports on the state of municipalities as well as the provincial administration.

It was then decided that ANC's national officials must assess and make proposals on the "reconfiguration" of the provincial government.

According to PEC member, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, the Municipalities identified as hotspots include Walter Sisulu, Enoch Mgijima, Raymond Mhlaba, Mnquma, Port St Johns and the Amathole Municipalities.

She says these Municipalities have been in the media for wrong reasons including corruption and political instability.

"In some of the municipalities we will be making changes in terms of the troika, which is the Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip and in others we'll be removing the powers of regions. The constitution (of the ANC) empowers us as the provincial executive committee to delegate certain functions to the regional executive committees."

Ndabeni-Abrahams said that party's Constitution empowers the provincial executive committee "to make sure that everything is well attended to and the people of the Eastern Cape get the services that they deserve."

The ANC's provincial executive committee in the Eastern Cape has also reportedly called on the National Executive Committee to move swiftly to remove President Jacob Zuma after it backed Cyril Ramaphosa in the party's presidential race.

In delivering his political overview at the PEC meeting this weekend, ANC provincial chairperson Oscar Mabuyane said that they will work to restore the integrity and credibility of the ANC.

"We need cadres who are committed to serving no other interest than the interests of the people, who seek no advantage for themselves or their families from the positions they occupy, and who safeguard public resources. We shall strengthen the Integrity Commission to deal with matters of ethics in the organisation and finalize its standing and the status of its decisions by June this year," he said.

He said the Provincial Executive Committee meeting preceded their 2018 Provincial Lekgotla which will be expected to make an assessment of the work done over past three years since the commencement of the fifth administration in relation to the commitments and resolutions we had taken, and as well as map out the ANC’s Programme of Action (POA) for the year as we also prepare for the Cabinet Lekgotla and State of the Province Address on 16 February.
