The ANC in the Eastern Cape has laid the blame for the attempted assasination of its OR Tambo regional chairperson, Xolile Nkompela, at the door of the SAPS.
A 27-year-old man died in hospital after being wounded when two men opened fire on the car in which Nkompela was travelling in late Thursday night in Tsolo.
He has not yet been identified.
In a strongly-worded statement Friday, ANC provincial spokesperson, Oscar Mabuyane, said that police had been warned about the plot to kill Nkompela.
He said the ANC was saddened by the incident but said they were "saddened more by the fact that the Police didn't act on the information about a plot to assassinate Comrade Nkompela when it was given to them. We call on the national police leadership from the national police commissioner, head of hawks, provincial police commissioner to act on the information they have about this plot," he said.
Mabuyane said they have "protested to the provincial police services about their non-action on this matter".
Police have a duty to act of information they receive about a planned act of criminality, Mabuyane said.
At the time of writing attempts to get comment from the SAPS in the Eastern Cape Friday were unsuccessful.
