A chief social worker and a coodinator of a government-run HIV/ AIDS project in Humansdorp, Nompumelelo Kila, has been sentenced to an effective five years imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court.
Magistrate Tobi Gerber on Tuesday sentenced Kila to seven years for theft but suspended two years of the sentence for a period of four years.
Gerber also ordered the Department of Social Development in Grahamstown to ensure that Kila's 16-year-old son be placed in safe care and that this be monitored regularly.
The Department of Social Development employee was found guilty of theft last year involving more than R100 000.
She was acquitted on a charge of corruption.
The court heard that Kila had demanded payment from the Ethembeni Community Organisation to ensure continued payment of grant funding to the organisation.
