An Eastern Cape man said to be one of the country's worst serial killers has pleaded guilty to 20 charges of murder.
Thirty-nine-year-old Bulelani Mabhayi also pleaded guilty in the Butterworth magistrate's court on Tuesday to six counts of rape and 10 of house-breaking with intent to commit a crime.
Mabhayi has been blamed for a reign of terror in Tholeni Village near Butterworth which goes back to 2008. Among his victims were children, both boys and girls and elderly women.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said the state had a water-tight case against Mabhayi.
He commended the police investigating team.
"The police went to great lengths to get hold of this man so much so a reward of R250 000 was issued by the police but without any success. The police managed to track him down and arrest him without having being assisted. The evidence they managed to collect was so overwhelming that he saw that there was no way out of this case hence he pleaded guilty." said Tyali
