Eastern Cape police make big perlemoen bust

Two Chinese nationals and farmer from Alexandria have been arrested following a big perlemoen bust on Thursday.

The raid on the farm was carried out by members of the Alexandria police in partnership with their Port Elizabeth counterparts.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula, says police were acting on a tip-off about illegal activity in the area when they raided the farm about 10 kilometres from Alexandria.

A large quantity of perlemoen, reportedly worth an estimated R20-million, was discovered on the farm.

Led by Captain Leon Els of the Alexandria detectives and Colonel Hein Fourie of the Mount Road detectives, police arrived at the farm at about 3pm. On entering the house, they found a floor full of abalone, some in plastic bags and some in wooden trays. In the house, police also found equipment including, electric fans, freezers, gas cylinders, burners and bags of chemicals.

The suspects will appear in court on Monday.
