A Grade 12 learner has been stabbed to death in an exam room in Whittlesea.
The Eastern Cape Education Department says 20-year-old Nathi Mbindela was stabbed by a fellow matriculant at Abambo Senior Secondary School on Tuesday, following a fight while invigilators were busy with the pre-stage processes of the examination.
Education Department spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima says they're gravely concerned about the safety of learners in schools.
Mtima says they have made a call to the police to have a strong presence at schools.
"We have called on the South African Police Services who assisted us with safety in our schools, and in the same school where the incident happened we have sourced social workers to council children, before they are moved to a different location to write their exams"
The Suspect has since been arrested and will appear in court on Thursday.
