Eastern Cape braces for first big winter cold front

The first cold wet weather of the 2020 season is expected this week, with a promise of some much-needed rain over Nelson Mandela Bay’s main catchment area of the Langkloof.

As of Monday morning, the average combined capacity of the NMB Metro’s main supply dams was at a mere 19.6%

The intense cold front is expected to pass over the western and eastern Cape on Monday, bringing with it showers and snow.

Garth Sampson at the PE branch of the SA Weather Service said the cold front is preceded by strong North Westerly winds over the interior with gale force Westerly winds expected along the coast and out to sea.

The Plettenberg Bay area can expect showers on Monday afternoon, spreading to Komani/Queenstown overnight.

Snow is expected over high peaks above 1500m on Monday night (Outeniqua, Tsitsikamma, Kouga, Baviaanskloof and Sneeuberg).

Sampson said the showers will spread towards the Drakensberg on Tuesday with snow expected over the Winterberg and Drakensberg.

Good falls of rain are expected over the South Western parts of the province with 25mm possible in the Langkloof.

Minimum temperatures are expected to plummet overnight from Tuesday through to Wednesday, with widespread frost over the interior on Wednesday morning.

Sampson cautions, however, that while the rain will be most welcome, it will do little to relieve the water crisis.

He is urging the public to continue using water sparingly.
