Eastern Cape braces for big freeze

The Port Elizabeth weather office is warning of the possibility of heavy falls of rain along the Tsitsikamma and Outeniqua coast this evening.

Rainfall amounts are expected to be below 50mm per 24hrs for the Plettenberg Bay/Tsitsikamma area, with heavy falls in the George area.

Senior forecaster Deon van der Mescht says rain and low freezing levels will spread from the Plettenberg Bay area into the western half of the Eastern Cape - west of Cradock - during Thursday morning, with snow expected over the Kouga, Sneeuberg and Winterberg Mountains.

The snow will continue through the day and it is possible that mountain passes in the Graaf-reinet, Cradock and Queenstown areas may be closed.

The Barkley East pass may be affected Thursday night into Friday morning.

Rapid clearance is expected from the west on Friday.
