Eastcape Midlands College mourns death of student killed by flooding

The Eastcape Midlands TVET College has confirmed that the body of a student who went missing during last week's flash floods in Kariega has been found.

According to a statement issued by the College, the deceased is 21-year-old Asemahle Mdiniso, who is a National Certificate (NCV) Level 2 student from Cape Town.

Members of EMC Management, including the Principal and the High Street Campus Manager, were present at the scene when the body was recovered.

They provided support to the parents and the rescue team.

"It is with deep sorrow that we confirm this tragic outcome.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Asamahle Mdiniso during this incredibly difficult time," said Assistant Director for Marketing and Communications Elmari van de Merwe.

Mdiniso and another female student were reported missing after they were last seen with a male friend when his white Suzuki vehicle allegedly got swept away near the Swartkops River.

The other female student is still unaccounted for.

Van de Merwe said fortunately their friend was rescued.

Rescuers got to him in the early hours of Sunday morning while he was clinging to a palm tree on the opposite side of the river.

Divers had to rush to the scene to rescue him.

On Saturday, police confirmed that the man's car was found submerged in water in the Swartkops River.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said Mdiniso's body was discovered on the banks of the Swartkops River in Cuyler Street on Friday afternoon.

Van de Merwe said counselling services will continue to be available for students and staff next week.

The current death toll in the floods is standing at ten.
