East London protest: 8 arrests for public violence

East London Police have arrested 8 suspects for public violence on the Ziphunzana Bypass.

Police Captain Stephen Marais says the arrests were made following a service delivery protest started by Duncan Village residents on Thursday night. 

He says the protesters continued burning tyres on the Bypass and Douglas Smith Highway on Friday morning, disrupting traffic headed into the CBD.

Marais says that shortly after they'd cleared the roads, the protesters started putting up barricades - prompting the intervention of public order police.

Police had to make use of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
