Health authorities will undertake mass screening and testing for covid19 at East London Correctional Centre after an official tested positive for the virus.
The Department of Correctional Service said in a statement on Monday that other officials who came into contact with the woman, have been identified and advised to self-isolate at home whilst awaiting testing.
Spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, said she is in a stable condition in hospital.
He said the National Institute for Communicable Diseases will commence with mass screening and testing at the facility on Wednesday.
Nxumalo said that “prevention measures will continue to be intensified”, while mass screening scheduled for all Correctional Centres will also help the Department in its efforts to curb the transmission of the virus.
“Correctional Services would like to appeal for calm during this period. We are committed to the wellbeing of offenders and officials in the Department,” he said.
