East London man drowns at Eastern Beach

A 35 year old man has drowned after being swept out to sea in East London.

Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon says rescue workers and police responded to a report of a near drowning at Eastern Beach, shortly after 7 o'clock in the evening.

He says on arrival an off duty lifeguard had managed to rescue the local man and brought him to shore.

Efforts to resuscitate him were exhausted and he was declared dead on the scene.

The name of the deceased is not yet known and police have opened up an inquest docket.
