An Eastern Cape couple who scored R2.6 million through alleged tax fraud was released on warning by the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The 40-year-old Eunice Mayizole and her 47-year-old husband Mongezi Sikhumbuzo Mayizole allegedly conspired and pretended to be tax practitioners working for the South African Revenue Services.
Police Spokesperson, Lwando Zenzile said the couple offered to assist community members with their tax returns and would meet taxpayers at predetermined venues to set them up on the SARS e-filing system.
He says the duo would then gain access to the log in details which allowed them to get unlawful refunds.
The matter was postponed to the 13 January 2021 pending further investigation.
