Police in Gqeberha are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after an e-hailing vehicle was torched in the CBD.
A spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 44-year-old driver of a Chevrolet Spark was on his way to a fish shop at the harbour at about 11 am on Monday when a minibus taxi blocked him in Strand street.
She says the driver alleged that several men jumped out of the taxi and forced him out of his car before assaulting him.
Colonel Naidu says the driver managed to escape before his car was set alight.
She says a case of assault is also being investigated and police are appealing to anyone who can assist in identifying the suspects or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.
Monday's incident is the latest in a string of recent assaults and targets on e-hailing drivers operating in the metro, allegedly by taxi operators.
On Wednesday, last week, a video showing an e-hailing driver being assaulted and kidnapped at a petrol station in Cape Road went viral.
Colonel Naidu told Algoa FM News at the time that they had seen the video but that no case had been opened with police.
