Buffalo City officials have arrested 59 people for drunk driving in weekend operations.
Provincial Traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said that the drivers “were arrested in an operation that was conducted on Saturday night until the early hours of Sunday morning in East London and Mdantsane.”
“This was a joint operation conducted by BCMM 47 Traffic officers together with 12 members of the South African Police Services,” he said.
Traffic Chief Commander Quinton Chetty described the operation as dramatic saying that at some point officers were involved in a high-speed chase which ended with a successful apprehension of the fleeing suspects.
"We also had a person escaped out of custody but was re-arrested," Chetty said.
He said the operation was part of the City's plan to reduce road accidents.
Chetty warned motorists, in the wake of the upcoming long holiday weekend, that drunken driving will not be tolerated in the city.
