Police in Gqeberha seized drugs and vials of medicine, valued at R2.2 million, as well as firearms and ammunition following intelligence-driven raids at two storage facilities in the city.

SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a multi-disciplinary operation led to the discovery of the illicit goods after a search warrant was executed at the storage units at about 7 p.m on Monday night.

She said seven firearms, 14 magazines, and 1371 rounds of ammunition of various calibre were confiscated.

Naidu said they also found 26 200 mandrax tablets, 39 boxes of teething powder as well as 160 vials of Xylotox, a combination medicine used as local anesthesia, during the raids.

She said ownership of the firearms is yet to be determined, and they will be sent for ballistic testing.

Colonel Naidu said an inquiry docket has been opened for further investigation and the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Team is following up on possible leads.

She said there no arrests were made at this stage.
