The Eastern Cape Transport Department says the driver of a scholar transport vehicle died in an accident between a mini-bus taxi and a goods train in Addo on Thursday.
Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the taxi was ferrying learners from Simankelwe Senior Secondary School when the accident occurred.
Three learners sustained serious injuries and one was airlifted to Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha.
The name of the deceased driver has not yet been released.
Eastern Cape health department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said a total of 20 patients were rushed to various hospitals in the area or treated on the scene following the accident.
A culpable homicide docket has been opened and the cause of the accident is under investigation by Addo SAPS.
