Police in Gqeberha are cautioning truck drivers who use GPS devices to make absolutely sure they reach their destinations via the correct route.
The warning follows after a 45-year-old truck driver from Sasolburg was attacked by community members in Soweto-on-Sea at 11 am on Wednesday.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says he was heading for Deal Party and experienced difficulty turning his truck around due to the narrowness of the road after the GPS directed him to turn into Johnson Road.
Naidu says community members started pelting him with stones and looted the truck, stealing camping gear including a refrigerator, clothing as well as his wallet.
She says when police arrived at the scene, the man was found seeking refuge at a nearby school as he was outnumbered by the group.
Naidu says four suspects aged between 25 and 30 were arrested, while more arrests are expected.
They were detained on charges of theft and malicious damage to property and are expected to appear in court soon.
Naidu says the estimated value of the items taken is R8 000 but most of the truckload was still intact when members arrived.
