Don't drink water in Kings Beach lake

The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) has assembled a team of experts to solve the persisting algae problem that has been affecting the newly constructed lake and fountain at Kings Beach, exacerbated by the onset of the summer season. Recent E-coli tests (attached) conducted by Scientific Services section of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality have confirmed that the water is not one of sewer quality and most importantly, that is indeed safe.

The MBDA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Pierre Voges says "We would like to reiterate that the lake was never intended as a swimming pool, but as a proactive green initiative, to use the existing unused aquifer flow as the means of irrigating the surrounding beach front area. To this end it has been successful. The lake is intended as an aesthetic reservoir for beachfront users to enjoy the plant and animal life in and around the lake". "This is a delicate natural balance between function and flair" concluded Voges.

"Currently the lake is being cleaned frequently using a manual process in order to remove the surface algae and litter. In addition to the algae, there are clusters of natural growth under the water which are basically aquatic plants, like one would find in a fish tank, they are not only a sign of a healthy water body but furthermore are assisting in the water purification process" added MBDA Operations Manager, Mcebisi Ncalu.

Mr Ncalu and his team which includes professionals in the field of BIO remediation and natural environmental issues in close collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University are hard at work, towards a lasting solution. Already there are a number of alternatives that the team is investigating including, introduction of various plant life, fish species, vigorous water circulation and water treatment techniques.

Although the tests indicate a safe body of water, the MBDA would like to urge the public not to use the lake and fountain as a source of drinking water or contact recreational purposes. For more information, the public can send an email to info@mbda.co.za.
