The National Sea Rescue Institute in Gqeberha assisted Bayworld at Sardinia Bay on Saturday morning where a bottlenose dolphin beached in shallow surf.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says the animal was found to be in good health, and was secured into a specialized marine animal stretcher.
He says the dolphin was transported to the NSRI Gqeberha rescue station in the care of marine scientists.
Laminon said it had sustained superficial and some minor injuries, suggesting that it may have had a scuffle with a shark.
He said the dolphin was taken five nautical miles off-shore and released in Algoa Bay in a complex rescue operation in rough sea conditions.
A Bayworld marine scientist was cautiously optimistic that the animal would survive.
