A 55-year-old man is in police custody following a family dispute in Salt Lake in Gqeberha on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says detectives arrested the suspect after he shot the family dog in the neck in an attempt to fire a shot at a family member.
She says the incident happened in Rensburg street on Sunday afternoon.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says it is alleged that the complainant left the house during the argument and was followed into the yard by the suspect who allegedly fired a shot in his direction.
The shot missed and hit the complainant's dog in the neck.
The animal was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrates court on Monday to face charges of attempted murder, pointing of a firearm and cruelty to animals.
A licensed firearm belonging to the suspect was also confiscated.
