The Department of Transport in the Eastern Cape have expressed their concern over what they call a "culture of drunk driving on our roads".
This follows after 54 motorists were arrested in and around Mthatha during the past long weekend.
Amongst those arrested includes police officers, doctors, taxi drivers, teachers, soldiers and an attorney.
The Department says drunk driving is a complex challenge they are dealing with and one of the highest contributing factors to road fatalities on our roads.
They urged motorists and all road users to respect the rule of law and refrain from using public roads when under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.
The Department will launch their Easter Road Safety Campaign on Friday when more roadblocks can be expected at so-called hotspots in the Province.
