DNA formally identifies body of Recolin Witbooi

The skeletal remains of a child which was found last month in Malabar, Port Elizabeth have been positively identified by DNA.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says tests confirmed that it was the 8-year-old Recolin Witbooi who went missing on the 6th of July in Helenvale.

Witbooi was missing for nearly three months before his remains were discovered by members of the community who were walking in a field.

Due to the state of the decomposition, the identification of the child could not be determined, even though Witbooi's parents identified him by his clothing.

Naidu says when Witbooi was last seen alive at his house in Uranus street, he was wearing a black hoodie top, black tracksuit pants and a pair of white Nike takkies.

She says the results of the post mortem could not confirm Witbooi's cause of death and the docket will remain an inquest.
