Disruptive snowfalls expected in EC

Residents in the Eastern half of the Eastern Cape should brace themselves for disruptive snowfalls.

The PE branch of the SA Weather Service says a cut-off low is expected to move into to the southern parts of the Free State by this evening, bringing with it cold unstable conditions and strong winds.

Spokesperson, Garth Sampson, says the effect of this system will be limited to the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, east of Tarkastad from later on Thursday.

Snow is expected over areas around the South parts of the Drakensberg from Thursday evening until around midday on Friday.  Disruptive snowfalls can be expected in places  such as Cofimvaba, Lady Frere, Elliot, Maclear, Engcobo, Barkley East, Jamestown, Tsolo,, Matatiele, Mount Ayliff and Ntabankulu.

People are advised to seek warm shelter and avoid using high mountainous passes .
Small stock farmers are advised to take the necessary precautions.

Severe thunderstorms are expected in places over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape (east of Tarkastad extending in a line to the Kei River Mouth) until later this evening. These storms can produce strong gusty winds.

It is advised to seek shelter in a sturdy building and to park cars away from old trees that may fall over.

Outlook for weekend

A frontal system touching the coastline will bring showers along the coastal belt and adjacent interior, from Plettenberg Bay to East London, from Friday midday onwards. It will start clearing from the west by late Saturday evening.

The interior will remain cool to cold.
