Dispute declared over workmanship at Newton Park pool

Nelson Mandela Bay's Architectural Services Division has declared a contractual dispute with the contractors responsible for the tiling of the Newton Park swimming pool.

A report to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services Committee states that a diagnostic report found that 80% of the tiling work had not failed and where it had, the contractor appears not to have fully complied with the specifications as far as preparation is concerned.

It says the fact that 80% of the tiles did not fail would suggest that the failure cannot be attributed to the tiles.

The contractor has denied responsibility for the defective work and a contractual dispute has therefore been declared.

The Newton Park swimming pool was drained at the end of July so that the lifting tiles could be inspected.

The facility has been standing idle ever since and will not be ready for opening to the public by the end of this month that signals the start of the summer season.

However, a report to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services Committee that meets later this week says that “all indications” are that the other pools in the metro will be ready.
