Police in Kwadwesi in Gqeberha are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after a truck was torched on the R75.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says a private truck contracted by the municipality was travelling on Uitenhage Road near Joe Slovo when a group of about 15 people approached the truck just after 6 pm on Wednesday.
Naidu says a burning tyre was then thrown under the truck which set both the carriage and front of the truck alight.
She says the truck driver managed to escape and ran away.
Naidu says it is believed that the incident took place as a result of residents from the Bayland informal settlement protesting because they do not have electricity.
She says the road is however open for traffic and Public Order Policing are in the area monitoring the situation.
