The Economic Freedom Fighters in the Western Cape says disgruntled taxi operators in the Garden Route will begin a series of rolling protests against the Bus Rapid Transit System in George from next Tuesday, the 28th of July.
The Go George bus service was introduced last December with the roll-out of the new bus service on new routes in the city.
However, some months later, the George Taxi Association, along with taxi operators from Oudthoorn, Knysna, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, claimed that they were not properly consulted and wanted to stop the Go George.
EFF chairperson on the Western Cape, Bernard Joseph, says that following a series of meetings yesterday, the taxi operators decided that the only remaining course of action available to them was to take to the streets of George in protest.
"They have taken it upon themselves to get lawyers to represent them and just yesterday morning they receive a letter from their lawyers, indicating that the George municipality are not keen to meet with them. Based on that the taxi industry of the Southern Cape have decided they will have rolling mass action.
The George Municipality says it is not prepared to comment on the matter at this stage.
