Diarrhoeal diseases starting to pick up in NMB

Gift of the Givers has opened another borehole in Nelson Mandela Bay, with a yield of 14 000 litres an hour.

The borehole at the Elizabeth Donkin Hospital in Forest Hill is strategically situated in the red zone and on a very good geological rock formation.

Gift of the Givers has also drilled boreholes at several schools, and at the Jose Pearson TB Hospital.

Founder, Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman, says their teams, in partnership with the municipality, have also visited several disused boreholes with a view to immediately resuscitating those in strategic areas.

He says the initial plan was to drill about 10 boreholes, but the city will need more.

Meanwhile, the District Department of Health says diarrhoeal diseases are starting to pick up in Nelson Mandela Bay due to the quality and lack of water.

This is according to District Manager, Darlene De Vos, who spoke to the media and stakeholders earlier on Tuesday.

De Vos says healthcare facilities, especially in the Northern Areas, are struggling due to water outages and on some days they have to close down due to the risk of infection.

She says there are up to four cases reported every week, mainly from the Kariega area.

De Vos says they do get daily reports from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases which will guide clinical teams on what antibiotics to use.
