Despatch police probe filling station brawl

Screengrab

Police in Despatch are investigating a violent brawl at a filling station which was captured on a cell phone video that has gone viral.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge, said the drama unfolded on Monday following an argument between some people that escalated into a brawl.

In the video a man in a striped shirt is seen using a sjambok to beat a man, while two women appeared to have also been assaulted in the melee.

At one point a shot is fired but this did not seem to end the brawl as the tables appeared to be turned on the man in the striped shirt who was himself beaten with what appeared to be a truncheon.

Beetge said a case of assault GBH, and a case of the unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place is being investigated.

“Any person with information that could assist police with this investigation can contact the SAPS Despatch Detective Sergeant Rohan Nel at 082 441 7828 or alternatively Crime Stop at 08600 10111,” Beetge said.

Meanwhile, provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, said two off-duty police officers were involved in the incident.
