A man from Despatch is suing the Minister of Police after unknown police officers allegedly shot him with rubber bullets while he was walking away from a spaza shop on 10 September 2019.
On the 10th of September 2019, a violent service delivery protest broke out along the R368 between Despatch and Bethelsdorp where two vehicles were set alight by angry community members.
Public Order Police were dispatched to the area in the morning to disperse the crowd.
Chante du Toit from Lessing, Heyns & van der Bank Attorneys is representing the 33-year-old father, Siyanda Seroto.
During the morning Seroto was a victim of an alleged unprovoked attack by police officers dressed like public order policing who allegedly fired shots at him.
Seroto sustained various rubber bullet wounds on the back of his legs.
Video footage of the alleged incident was supplied to Algoa Fm news which shows the unknown officers firing in Seroto's direction after which he had to crawl to his house while the police simply ignored him.
He was however picked up later by a Despatch police van who took him to a local clinic whereafter he was transported by ambulance to the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.
Seroto is seeking damages running into hundreds of thousands of rands for both medical expenses and trauma.
The matter has been set down for trial at the Port Elizabeth High Court in September, two years after the alleged incident.
Police declined to comment on civil court matters.
