Deputy Labour Minister pays surprise visits to PE-based companies

Two global companies based in Port Elizabeth got a surprise visit from the Department of Labour on Monday.

Mondelez International and Coca- Cola had been identified as companies who had previously not complied with certain labour law criteria, and which prompted this third visit by the department.

Deputy Minister, Phathekile Holomsa and his team of inspectors met with the two companies and the funeral Parlour, Shweme and Shweme.

Holomisa said he has noticed that a number of companies, especially white -owned, are resistant to change.

He said the department is now moving to more radical solutions by applying punitive measures in the legislation.

“We have always been moving from the premise that employers are South Africans, that they understand the history from where we’re coming from and that they know that a number of changes must take place,” said Holomisa.

He said that government had been hoping that companies would change by themselves, but he said it seemed that government must be more radical and use the punitive measures that in the legislation.

Meanwhile, Mondelez International Corporate Government Affairs Manager, Navisha Bechabsewkuran said the firm was committed to ensuring employment equity runs throughout the business.

“We’ve made key appointments at senior management level and we’ll continue to do this as we go along”.

She said this will filter down to middle-management and worker level.
