Death toll at Hoërskool Driehoek revised down to 3

The death toll at school in Vanderbijlpark where a walkway collapsed has been revised back to three.

The walkway that connects the school hall with another building collapsed on Friday morning.

Hoërskool Driehoek confirmed that an "incident" took place at the school and evacuated all pupils.

The deaths were confirmed by the Gauteng MEC Steve Mabona.

Several Medical teams have been dispatched to the school and roads around the area have been cordoned off.

A spokesperson for ER24 Russel Meiring says the victims are between the ages of 14 and 17 and were declared dead on the scene.

He said nothing could be done for them.

Several learners were trapped in the rubble and various tools were used to free them.

Meiring says four children were airlifted to hospital while several others were transported via ambulance.

The exact details as to what lead to the collapse are unknown and will form part of an investigation.

The school is closed until further notice.

The names of the victims have not yet been released but it was confirmed that it was two men and one female.
