Deadly weekend of gang shootings in Nelson Mandela Bay

Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Retief Odendaal, has called for the implementation of a 72-hour activation plan “after a deadly weekend of gang violence in the Northern Areas of the Metro.”

He said the City would make all available resources available to SAPS to help bring those responsible to book.

SAPS reported the murder of 30-year-old Alviro Isaacs, who was shot dead by three men at Smelly Creek Lighthouse in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the body of a man was found next to a VW Golf in Imbuia Street in Arcadia.  He sustained multiple gunshot wounds

“Whilst police were still busy at this scene, they were informed that a second deceased person was lying in an open field behind Oosthuizen Street. Arcadia. A third victim who was also allegedly shot was taken to hospital by ambulance while the fourth victim managed to escape, unhurt,” she said.

“The second deceased also sustained multiple gunshot wounds,” Naidu said.

She said the victims had left a house and while getting into a vehicle they were shot by unknown suspects, who pursued and fired on their fleeing victims, between the ages of 26 and 29.

She said the names of the deceased in this incident will be released at a later stage.

Naidu also reported the murder of an 18-year-old man on Calvin Street, Extension 6 in Malabar, the murder of a man, and the attempted murder of another in “Barcelona.”

In a statement on Sunday, Mayor Odendaal offered his condolences to the families of those “who were tragically killed.”

Mayor Odendaal has also given residents the assurance that the municipality will make resources such as the metro police and security services available to work with the SAPS to bring the responsible criminals to book.

“I have spoken to the SAPS district commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, and called for a 72-hour activation plan.  The Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Councillor Lawrence Troon, and I have offered the City’s support to track down the killers,” he added.

“Major-General Ncata has assured me that the police, are prioritising the violence in the Northern Areas and that he will provide feedback on an activation plan,” Odendaal said.
