Deadly Bay floods claim two lives

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says it has noted with concern the persistent rains that have caused devastating floods in large parts of the metro, resulting in at least two deaths in Kariega.

Municipality spokesperson Sithembiso Soyaya said on Saturday morning that two more people were also missing.

Many areas were inaccessible on Saturday, including Blue Horizon Bay and Matamzima Road in Kwanobuhle which was closed after a section of the road collapsed.

The municipality said large parts of Kariega were also flooded and motorists were advised to avoid the area or choose safer routes.

“At Cuyler from the bridge up to Caledon, the road is full of debris,” the metro said in a statement.

Soyaya said power failures affected a number of suburbs in Nelson Mandela Bay as a result of the floods, including Fairview, Humewood, parts of Newton Park, Summerstrand and Walmer.

"Metro police, fire services, sea rescue, SAPS, ambulance services, and all rescue services have been activated where needs be and are currently assisting those residents most affected and impacted by the flood incidents," he said.

NMB has also moved its Joint Operations Centre to Kariega SAPS as it is the hardest hit area in the Metro.

"Although all teams are on the ground as we speak, one of the main focuses is to prevent loss of life."
