In a historic win, the Democratic Alliance Student Organisation has won the Student Representative Council of Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.
The ANC-aligned South African Students Congress, Sasco, which has had tight control over the SRC for the past two years, only managed to secure 37% of the vote.
The university has been home to great ANC leaders, and has always been a stronghold of the ANC.
Daso won a clear majority of 52.5% of the student votes, up from 20.5% in last year’s SRC election.
The student organisation now governs the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Fort Hare.
National DA Youth leader and Member of Parliament, Yusuf Cassim, said the victory was a major breakthrough for the organisation.
