Three prisoners are on the run after escaping from the Middeldrift Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday.
They are Sizwe Mhlana, Andisa Vas and Aziwe Nkwalase who were serving lengthy jail sentences for crime ranging from attempted murder to assault.
Eastern Cape Correctional Services spokesperson, Nobuntu Gantana, says the circumstances leading to the escape are not yet known and an internal investigation is currently underway.
The Department wishes to caution the public not to try and apprehend the escapees as they are dangerous criminals. Members of the public are urged to report any information to the police that might lead the rearrest of the escapees".
Gantana said that the Department of Correctional Services is doing all in its power to re-arrest the escapees and is committed to ensuring that all citizens of South Africa are and feel safe.
Sizwe Mhlana serving 10 years for robbery.
Andisa Vas serving 12 years for attempted murder-robbery.
Aviwe Light Nkwalase serving 16 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances.
