DA to embark on 'One Teacher One Classroom' march

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape will embark on a 'One Teacher One Classroom' march on Friday to the offices of the Department of Education in Zwelitsha, East London.

The march will be led by DA provincial leader Athol Trollip and shadow MEC of Education and MPL Edmund van Vuuren.

Speaking to AlgoaFM News, Van Vuuren said the campaign seeks to highlight the serious lack of teachers in the Eastern Cape which has led to parents closing schools that their children attend.

Van Vuuren says there are more than 5000 teachers in excess that unfortunately do not match the profiles of substantive vacant posts.

"The question that I'm going to pose to the MEC or to the acting superintendent-general, Ray Tywakadi that's going to receive our petition, what are the plans on the table to fill these substantive vacant posts if these posts cannot be filled through the teachers that are in excess or if they cannot be filled by them, then how are they going to fill those posts? At the moment there are no teachers in the market, because schools have advertised and they have not received any responses." says Van Vuuren.
