The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has offered legal assistance in a civil claim for a 62-year-old pensioner who was assaulted by the mayor of Tarkastad.
The victim, Mati Joka, received severe chest injuries after she was attacked by the mayor, Khayalethu Nqiqhi, following an altercation on service delivery.
DA MPL, Dacre Haddon, says Joka will be taken to Queenstown next week to consult with a lawyer.
"I have also written to the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, asking him to respond verbally in the legislature on this matter during the first plenary of the year in mid-February.
Nqiqhi appeared in court on Monday on a charge of assault and his case was remanded to February 22.
