The Democratic Alliance says it intends to adopt a sexual harassment policy as a matter of urgency after Bhisho Chief Whip, Edmund Van Vuuren, was found guilty of sexual harassment of a junior staff member.
The DA announced that van Vuuren would be expelled from the party.
DA Federal Chairman James Selfe says the DA's Federal legal Commision found Van Vuuren guilty and recommended a particular sanction - however that sanction was found to be too lenient by the Federal's Executive.
He says the Federal Executive recommended that Van Vuuren's membership rather be terminated.
Selfe says the DA has several policies affecting staff and public representatives but there is no policy to address sexual harassment between a public representative and a staff member.
He says this will be addressed as a matter of urgency and they are hoping to adopt a policy during their next council meeting in February.
Van Vuuren has ten days to appeal.
