The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has approached the Special Investigations Unit to investigate potential impropriety in the awarding of several tenders to deliver Personal Protective Equipment to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
The party's provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga says it has come to their attention that an ANC-affiliated company, Kaziforce, was awarded a tender to deliver protective face masks to the Metro as one of only three shortlisted companies.
He says a family member of ANC councillor, Gamelihleli Maqula, a former director of the company, is still indicated as the sole director of this business.
Bhanga says Kaziforce delivered 34 400 masks at R19-50 each at a total cost of R670 800.
He says according to the PPE price list provided by National Treasury, these Type 1 masks should be bought at no more than R10,22 per mask - including VAT.
Bhanga says from the documentation they have been provided, it is also clear that the majority of companies delivering face masks to the Metro are overcharging and not following the guidelines set down by National Treasury.
