DA reports Eastern Cape textbook saga to the Public Protector

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says it has asked the Public Protector to investigate the Education Department's failure to solve chronic workbook shortages in schools.

DA MPL, Edmund van Vuuren, says to date they've not received a satisfactory response from either the Minister or the MEC to letters of demand in July and August.

He says they've identified chronic workbook shortages in the Port Elizabeth and Queenstown districts.

Van Vuuren says the DA is also concerned that the Department of Education continues to deceive the public about progress in addressing the chronic shortages.

He says it was promised that all books would be in schools by 22 July but more than three weeks into the school term this has still not taken place.
