DA provincial leader to fight Bhisho legislature sanction

The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape says its outraged at the sanctions imposed on the party's provincial leader, Atholl Trollip.

He was found guilty of contravening the code of ethics of the legislature, by impugning Premier, Phumullo Masualle's good name for allegedly calling him a liar and a cheat.

Trollip also refused to apologise for claiming that written questions to the premier had been changed.

"I indicated at the time that I was prepared to make a conditional apology to the Premier and that I would not apologise before the original question was answered. I could not apologise for doing my work and for holding the executive of the provincial government to account."

These related to questions about money paid into the bank the Premier's bank account for the funeral service of former president Nelson Mandela.

"I was again asked to apologise yesterday [Thursday], for an expanded bouquet of alleged infractions. Again I refused to do so, because doing so would be tantamount to self-muzzling or self-emasculation. " said Trollip.

Trollip was slapped with a 15-day suspension coupled to a fine of one month's salary.

The DA provincial leader says he will be fighting the sanction.
