The Democratic Alliance has laid criminal charges against the Acting Municipal Manager of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
This is for allegedly failing to address a massive sewage spill in Burgersdorp in the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality.
MP, Marina van Zyl, says the District Municipality is responsible for providing water and sanitation services to Walter Sisulu Municipality but has failed dismally in doing so.
She says the spill poses an ecological and health disaster to the people of Burgersdorp, especially in Thembisa on the outskirts of the town.
Van Zyl wrote to the Acting Manager on the 12th of December asking him to intervene and find a solution by Thursday.
The criminal charges were laid at the Burgersdorp Police Station in terms of the National Environmental Management Act.
